The Fourth Day of Christmas Sweaters

Day 4

Over the years, many people have asked me why I don’t do 25 days of Christmas sweaters. The answer is simple. I did not want the wearing of Christmas sweaters to overshadow my birthday. However, I was overzealous this year and accidentally ended up with too many sweaters. Thus, I will be wearing a Christmas sweater on my birthday tomorrow. Since we don’t have any plans to go anywhere fancy tomorrow, I don’t mind too much.

I’m singing a beautiful aria in my mezzo soprano voice. Just kidding. My voice currently sounds like an old man who chain smokes.

Jono has been busy wrapping all of the presents that I have been sent in the mail and putting them underneath our tiny tree. I’m pretty psyched to open them tomorrow! Happy birthday eve to me!

Teddy SweaterIt is the third day of the 20 Days of Christmas Sweaters! I left the cocoon of sickness and bone broth to go to the mall in search of treasures. While I was there, a bird landed in my hand in Macy’s. It was a magical moment.

This knitted masterpiece was found by my husband. A teddy bear wearing a Santa hat and holding a candy cane is pretty much the epitome of Christmas spirit. This is the first of my brand new sweaters. What do you think of it? Let me know in the comments.

Mani Monday and Snowmen

It’s Mani Monday and also the second day of the 20 Days of Christmas Sweaters. My nails are wearing OPI’s Smitten in Mittens, a darkly beautiful red glass fleck polish. The rest of me is wearing striped flannels and snowmen.

I’m feeling a little better, but I’m not 100%. Our apartment complex had Santa Claus come for photos today, but I wasn’t feeling up to greeting him. I’m trying not to feel too disappointed. 😉 I’m saving my newer sweaters for when I feel better because they are quite dramatic. Look forward to it!

The Beginning

Today is the first day of the wearing of the Christmas sweaters. You may be asking why I am starting so early this year. The answer, good friend, is that my storehouse of sweaters has a surplus this year. Thus, I will be celebrating the 20 Days of Christmas Sweaters.

I caught a bug during our Thanksgiving travels and cannot seem to shake it. Therefore, I am keeping you from the horrible sight of my greenish face. Also, forgive my short post. I hope to feel better tomorrow and show my Christmasy spirit to the fullest extent. Let me know if you’re also wearing a Christmas sweater in the comments.

Things You Need to Wait for the Great Pumpkin

It’s pretty late, so I won’t be writing much. I have to go out to our pumpkin patch to wait for the Great Pumpkin. Here are a list of things that you should bring to your pumpkin patch on this Halloween night:

  1. A feisty jack o’lantern

This is a pirate pumpkin. Arrgh!

Mani Monday: Paprika

Dear Readers (mostly my supportive husband and mother-in-law),

I am sorry that I have been so remiss in posting to my blog. I even forgot to post pictures of my back-to-school sweater. I am very sorry. Please find it in your hearts to forgive me. I know you will because I have some awesome fall sweaters that I plan on wearing ASAP.

Now, let’s move forward together. It is Mani Monday, and I have a beautiful coral to share with you. It’s Paprika by OPI. In the bottle, it looks quite reddish. In the warmth of incandescent lights it looks more orangey. However, in direct sunlight it is almost neon. It’s quite a stunning shade. It was on clearance for a buck in the Ulta clearance section, and I’m glad I “splurged” on it.

I would really like to start my own nail polish line so that I could name the colors. Should I start a Kickstarter to make it happen? Actually, Kickstarter takes a big percentage of the money given, so forget that. You can just hand me the cash directly. As Sally Brown once said in a letter to Santa, “Make it easier on yourself. Just send money. How about tens and twenties?”

Mani Monday: Back-to-School Blues

chambray 2

Guess who’s back? Back again? Mani Monday’s back. Tell a friend.

(I’m sure that Eminem won’t mind me misusing his lyrics to bring back Mani Monday.)

I recently lucked out at Ulta and scored a bunch of OPI and Zoya nail polishes on clearance for $2 that were also usable with their in-store coupon. It’s like God was giving me a sign to continue Mani Mondays. As a Christian, I find it is my duty not to ignore signs from God, so I am back to blogging my nails.

Since teachers and students are going back to school this month, I have decided to go with this chambray color from OPI called “Dining Al Frisco.” This color reminds me of blue jeans and the 90’s, so I believe it is the perfect color for the first day of school.

CHambray 1

I really like this color. It leans more gray-blue in real life, but it is hard to capture with my camera (phone). Unfortunately it does not last very long. I have some rather large chips after two days of wear.

As I was researching this color, I realized that I had another color from the OPI San Francisco collection, Alcatraz… Rocks. This is an amazing royal bluish (navy/purple) textured glitter color that I wore on the red carpet for my husband’s movie Moms’ Night Out.

That is Alcatraz… Rocks on my nails. Hmm, I really had planned on just talking about school stuff, but all of these San Francisco names are making me reminisce about my trip to San Francisco for my best friend’s 30th birthday. Forget going back to school! Let’s just focus on vacations!

I hope that you have enjoyed my rambling trip down memory lane. I know I have. I will save my back to school memoirs for another day.

Meal Plan Sunday

Homemade Ratatouille looks messy but tastes delicious!

Homemade Ratatouille looks messy but tastes delicious!

I like to eat, but I find that cooking can be a chore. It is an especially hard chore right now because we are sharing a car, which makes getting ingredients a hassle on our gridlocked street at dinner time. (We will probably not buy a new car anytime soon. We like all the money we are saving and our small carbon footprint.) Meal planning cuts down on multiple grocery trips per week and also makes budgeting easier. I have found the extra work meal planning a little annoying, which is why I am sharing my meal plans with you. Now you don’t have to do all the work!

(Quick caveat: we eat a lot of chicken because I drink bone broth everyday for my modified GAPS diet.)

Here is my week’s meal plan:

Monday: Chef Salad (Hardboiled eggs, bacon, the works! Okay, okay, I admit that I skip the cheese.)

Tuesday: Tacos and Salsa Rice (Molly’s World Famous Salsa Rice Recipe: dump salsa in rice.)

Wednesday: Turkey Burgers and Baked Fries (Add jalapenos and jalapeno juice to the burgers. It is delicious.)

Thursday: Roasted Chicken and Ratatouille

Friday: Homemade Pizza

Saturday: Chicken Soup

Sunday: Roasted Chicken and Eggplant with Marinara

Here is the recipe I use for the roasted ratatouille. It is from Martha Stewart Living magazine. I find that this magazine’s recipes always have one thing wrong in all of the recipes. My hypothesis is that the editors do this on purpose so that we will never attain the level of hostessness of ol’ Martha herself. What do you think?

Ratatouille Recipe

Cook the zucchini first instead of the eggplant. If you cook the eggplant first, it will get soggy.

Anyway, I hope this helps all of you meal planners out there. Happy Sunday!

Weekday Watchlist for Cinco de Mayo

Hola, mis amigos! You may have noticed that I did not write a Mani Monday this week. That is because I cut my nail on a sharp corner and tore it through the middle of the nail plate. (I googled “fingernails” to see what that part of the nail is called. I am not a genius.) This means that I can’t paint my nails until the tear grows out. I am trying not to sink into “the depths of despair,” but it is quite a trying time for me.

Let’s not dwell on my horrible nails any longer. It’s Cinco de Mayo! We are celebrating at home this year, but that does not mean there will be no fiesta. I will be making delicious taco salads and maybe painting my toenails. (Painting your toenails is festive, right?)

In honor of this Mexican celebration, I suggest that you watch The Book of Life. Yes, I know that it starts out on el Dia de Muertos, but I really can’t pass up an opportunity to talk about this movie. Last year, I couldn’t believe that people went nuts online over The Lego Movie while saying nothing about this colorful-concoction of animated goodness. It really is a shame. The Book of Life is a classic narrative of rivalry and romance set in a vibrantly animated old world Mexico and voiced by an all-star cast. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. Happy watching!

Mani Monday: Negative Space

IMG_1524

I don’t know if you know this, but negative space is cool. What’s negative space? Well, it’s the part of your nail that you don’t paint. Why? It’s cool. Cool things are beyond all reason.

This nail art is inspired by the lovely Jinsoon Choi and are my entry for her Instagram contest.

Who is Jinsoon? Well, she is a celebrity nail artist.

I follow Jinsoon on Insta because her nail designs are creative yet attainable. Jinsoon always knows what’s next in nail fashion, and what’s next never involves cheating with Sharpie paint pens and stickers. The omission of stencils and stick-ons allow her designs to have elegance but still retain the imperfection of being made by a human hand. I love that. (Plus, she’s Korean. Who doesn’t love a Korean girl?)

I hope you are well-rested from the weekend. I am still a bit tired from waking up early to grab some Lilly Pulitzer pieces from Target. There were women who had been waiting outside of the store at 5:00am. (I got there 5 minutes before the store opened and thought I was pretty crazy.) These women were Lilly hawks. Here are all of the ladies lined up outside the dressing room. None of these women wanted to try anything on. These ladies just wanted to snatch up all the rejects. They were all pretty upset when they found out my rejects were from the children’s section.

While I was trying things on in the dressing rooms, some crazy ladies decided to try their clothes on outside in public. They did not pull their Lilly Pulitzers over the clothes they were wearing. They took off things and exposed themselves to my husband. When I returned from the fitting room (where normal people undress themselves), my husband was quite upset about the assault on his eyes. However, as artists, we took it upon ourselves to become inspired by what had transpired. Here is our reinterpretation of the great Lillygate of 2015:

Here is art imitating life. Life is tired.
