Mani Monday: Neon Stripes and Easter Aftermath

I love holidays, and I thought that having a holiday blog would be amazing. However, there’s a catch. A blog about holidays should have amazing pictures of holiday celebrations, and I never remember to take pictures during holiday celebrations. I’m always too busy having fun to stop and take pictures. I sometimes wonder if all the faux-celebrities on Instagram actually ever get to enjoy any of the soirées that they attend because their pictures must take a lot of time to get right.

Jono bought me these Easter candies after Easter, which made them more delicious because they were half off.

Here’s my short Easter weekend recap: lunch in Augusta with college friends, The Carolina Opry in Myrtle Beach, birthday party in Charleston with other college friends, and Easter celebrations. (All of these were fun-filled events, and I have nary a picture to show for them.)

On Easter, I made key lime pie for the first time ever. It is my husband’s favorite pie. I even decided to get fancy and make a delicious pecan crust. It was super easy to make, and even easier to polish off.

Easter Sunday also kicked off the mini-series A.D. The Bible Continues. I wasn’t excited about watching another Biblical series because they can get a little stale. However, this production is very well-made (not just tolerable). Jono and I actually look forward to watching this show every Sunday. Check it out at Sunday nights at 9:00 on NBC.

Also, Downton Abbey fans might enjoy seeing Kevin Doyle, AKA Mr. Molesley, as Joseph of Arimathea.

Okay, I think we’re all caught up now. Wait, I forgot to tell you about last weekend. That can wait for another day. Let’s talk about my nails. I can’t quite get the neon colors to show up quite right. The base color is the highlighter yellow color pictured with my Easter candy. A sweet friend gave it to me. It was quite sheer, so I had to layer it over white. Unfortunately, I only have a cheap Wet n Wild white, which is quite streaky. I decided to paint stripes over it to hide the uneven color. It looks better in real life.

I hope that you had a blessed Easter.

P.S. My husband makes the best deviled eggs.

I Spy a Spy

IMG_1439

I just happen to follow Melissa McCarthy on Twitter, and last week she just happened to tweet about a screening of her next movie in Atlanta with a link for free tickets. I snapped up those tickets like a crazy homeschool mom at a free book bin (you know what I’m talking about) and crossed my fingers in hope of a high-five from the great MM.

He's pretty cute, right?

He’s pretty cute, right?

We arrived at the theater a little after 8:00. The movie was supposed to start at 9:30. The line was already wound around the velvet ropes to the last row. However, we did have our phones, so we played an exciting game of Ticket to Ride while we waited.

IMG_1445 IMG_1447 IMG_1443

Finally, the theater started to buzz as we all noticed the PR people clustering in excitement and some burly security guys guarding the exit. MelMac was in the building! (Do you think that Melissa McCarthy will like to be called all of these nicknames when we become BFFs?) She gave a good little intro to the film and deflected adamant requests for pics from selfie-whores with humor and grace. She also had some nice words for her co-stars, including one Miranda Hart.

Miranda Hart…

Where had I heard that name before?

c/o Spy Movie Facebook

c/o Spy Movie Facebook

It is only the name of my favorite midwife, Chummy! (Okay, I really mean the actress who plays Chummy.)

c/o Call the Midwife Facebook

c/o Call the Midwife Facebook

This made me even more psyched. Forget Jude Law and Jason Statham. Gimme more hilarious ladies in my films, please!

Okay, so on to the movie. Spy is a sort of James Bond spoof but not in an Austin Powers type of way. It is about Susan Cooper (MM), a CIA agent who stays in her dead-end desk job so she can stay in the life of one Bradley Fine, a Bond-esque agent played by Jude Law. When something goes horribly wrong on Fine’s mission, Susan finally goes undercover herself and becomes the baddest agent of them all.

Side Notes:
MelMac is obviously the star and obviously gut-bustingly hysterical.
Miranda Hart is a riot as Susan Cooper’s colleague and friend, Nancy.
Rose Byrne’s Rayna Boyanov, a seller of nuclear weapons, is her funniest role yet.
Jason Statham’s caricature of an action hero is spot-on and scene-stealing.
Jude Law is good eye candy and is always good.
Allison Janney is hilarious as usual.
There were lots of people I recognized in little cameos, including Mr. McCarthy (AKA Ben Falcone), but my favorite was definitely Michael McDonald from Madtv.
This movie will definitely be rated R. I also found a couple of scenes to be too graphic for my own personal taste. I will say that I am not much for violence though.
I don’t usually say this, but I really liked the music. There were lots of female singers.

c/o Spy Movie Facebook

c/o Spy Movie Facebook

The best part of this movie for me was that all of the females were allowed to be funny, interesting, showcased characters. Even as a child, I hated Bond movies because I never understood why women would throw themselves at a man only to be killed by him. I may not have understood feminism, but I knew that I did not like to watch women on the sidelines. Spy fulfills the deepest longings of my celluloid heart, including a friendship between two of my fave actresses. Really, what more could I want?

Spy will be in theaters on June 5. Check out the trailer here.

P.S. MelMac, if you’re reading this and desirous of a new script to produce, I have one for you. Just let me know.

Mani Monday: Impressions of Spring

IMG_1431

In honor of the lovely spring weather we have been enjoying, I give you my own interpretation of blooming flowers. I was going to actually paint flowers on my nails but did not like the stark contrast of the white nail polish I had painted as the background color. I randomly decided to dot different hues of pinks, purples, and nudes on my nails and found that I enjoyed the results.

IMG_1429

It feels rather impressionistic, right? If only someone paid me to do my own nails. Then my life as a nail artist would be complete. <Insert dramatic sigh here.>

I have really been loving my new Butter London basecoat and topcoat. I believe I did these nails on Thursday, and I only have one chipped nail today. Usually, I would redo all of my nails when I get a bad chip, but this mani is easily fixable. I added more colors to the chipped nail, and now no one will be the wiser.

It is important to look my best tonight because we are going to a film screening, and I am hoping to meet the funny star. I’ll update you about it tomorrow.

IMG_1435IMG_1436

For now, I’ll leave you with this disturbing stuffed animal/goldfish bowl combo. It can hold your pets or your snacks! What an amazing invention.

Weekend Watchlist: Spring is for Bunnies

I know that people are more likely to watch something if it is available for instant streaming. Okay, most people aren’t going to watch something that they have to leave their house to go get or buy. However, trying to find movies to recommend to stream that fit my life themes is hard. A lot of times my first or even second choice of movies isn’t available. Am I letting people down with my recommendations for weekend laziness? I don’t know. I’m in a bit of a quandary, which is why I skipped the Watchlist last week and it is late this week.

Last weekend, I thought of a great many movies to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day: Boondock Saints, The Departed, Philomena, etc. There were also some films that I hadn’t seen yet but thought I might like to watch and pass on. I know now that I should’ve watched The Wind That Shakes the Barley or The Quiet Man, but instead I watched Ondine. It was pretty meh, so I didn’t recommend it. I already wrote about I.Q., and I thought that might be pushing it.

This week I tried to find a movie about spring. When you google “movies about spring,” you will mostly end up with B movies about girls on spring break. No, thank you. The best film I could come up with is Miss Potter, a quirky little movie about Beatrix Potter.

p162721_d_v7_aa

I actually liked Miss Potter. First of all, how could I resist a movie where Ewan McGregor sings? Second of all, how could I resist an eccentric, independent female author who lives in a time where women are stifled? Third of all, how could I resist Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor together? However, the plot is more dedicated to historical accuracy than to an audience’s pleasure, so I can see why others might not be so smitten with this little movie. If you like bunnies and underdogs, you can stream this for free on Amazon Prime or rent it for $2.99. However, if you don’t like a slow-burn romance and high society, skip it.

scott HGTV-showchip-property-brothers

If spring is more about spring cleaning and redecorating for you, may I suggest that you watch Income Property and Property Brothers before they disappear off Netflix on April 1st? No, this is not an April Fools’ Joke. Get your fix before they are gone. Don’t worry about Hilary and David though. Love It or List It is staying for now.

Do you have a suggestion for my Netflix queue or Amazon watchlist? Let me know in the comments!

Mani Monday: Four-Leaf Clovers on Butter

IMG_1424

Artsy, right?

It’s a very exciting time of year for makeup hoarders lovers of America. It’s Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty Sale. For 21 glorious days, there are special flash sales on high-end products. Last Thursday, Butter London nail polish was reduced to a mere $9. I was in a panic all that day, worrying that my store (which is always out of everything) would run out before I got there. However, they had plenty of bottles left when I arrived.

I bought Hardwear PD Quick Topcoat, which is way too long of a name for a topcoat. I really needed it because I used up my CND Speedy Topcoat on my glitter nails from last week. Hardwear usually retails for $19, so I got it for more than half off. Plus, it is 0.1 ounce larger than Speedy, which sells for $8.50. I also decided to buy a mate for my topcoat, a basecoat called Nail Foundation Flawless Basecoat.

Ivy League (L), Emerald City (R)

Ivy League (L), Emerald City (R)

I honestly wasn’t expecting much because I sometimes feel like topcoats are like shampoo. You can find one that you really love, but one day it just stops working for you. However, I am really loving this combo. After my Piccadilly Green manicure flaked off, I painted my nails with cheap $3 Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear polish in Ivy League. This color is shimmery and semi-sheer. I then painted four-leaf clovers on my thumbs in Emerald City.

IMG_1422

Making a four-leaf clover isn’t that hard. First, make sure that you have a minimal amount of paint on your brush. Then make four dots in a circle on your nail. Try to make the dots kind of uneven to make the leaves look more realistic like my first attempt.

IMG_1623

Jono’s attempt at being artsy at the mall. The lighting is too icky for good pics there.

My left thumb was my first attempt. I made the dots too round and close together. It looks like a schoolkid painted it for art class. The right thumb’s dots are spaced farther apart and are more free-form. This makes the clover look more natural.

My new topcoat and basecoat have really made this manicure last. This Sally Hansen nail polish usually only lasts a couple days on me. I didn’t notice any chipping until after I cleaned the bathroom today, which is day four. Four days is double my usual wear time for these greens. So far I give Butter London two green thumbs-up.

Mani Tuesday: The Wearing of the Green

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I hope you are all celebrating St. Paddy’s Day in style. For me, that means having a sparkly green manicure. This is not just any green glitter nail polish. It is the fairest in all the land.

IMG_1398IMG_1403

Isn’t it lovely? The color is from Nails Inc. and called Piccadilly Green. I actually thought the name was Emerald all this time because of this odd sticker on the cap. I only noticed it’s real name yesterday.

IMG_1413

(Why does it say “Emerald” on the cap? Did the people at Nails Inc. think that we might not be able to see what color the nail polish is? Is this a blue/black or white/gold situation?)

I’m definitely not confused about how much I love these myriads of green glitter on my nails. The glitter comes in various sizes and is full coverage. It’s everything I wished Deborah Lippman nail polish to be and with a 50% smaller price tag. Unfortunately, it only lasts one or two days. I think it’s worth it, and I wear this color every March 17 and around Christmas time (with the red version of this polish). However, I have some bad news. Nails Inc. has revamped their nail polish and no longer sells this color on their website. I bought this at Sephora a long time ago, so you might check around to see if they have any bottles still loitering on the shelves.

How did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Did you eat corned beef with boiled potatoes and cabbage? Did you call your husband “Seamus” all day? Did you get a free frozen lemonade from Chick-Fil-A? Did you watch half of an Irish film on Netflix and then not finish it so you could watch The Mindy Project?

I did.

Let me know how your day went already!

Weekend Watchlist: Happy Pi Day!

Today is a very special Pi Day. The month, day, and year are equal to the first five numbers of pi, which are 3.1415. I hope that you are celebrating with mathematical joy by solving some geometric equations. Or perhaps you like to take the “punny” route and bake a pie on Pi Day. Whatever floats your boat is fine by me.

I know I could easily pick Life of Pi or Pi for my Weekend Watchlist, but I’ve decided against both since neither is on Netflix streaming. (Also, I’ve never seen Pi.) I know you people like instant gratification. Therefore, I choose I.Q.

large_1fK9Fi1rdwhOU6AWkyIUhxwljiI

The story of I.Q. is by Andy Breckman, the man who gave us Rat Race and Monk among other comedic gems. (He also wrote for SNL and Letterman.) He shares writing credit with Michael Leeson who has written for just about every classic show on Nick at Nite. (Sidenote, what’s the deal with all the new shows on Nick at Nite?) I.Q. was directed by Fred Schepisi who directed Steve Martin’s huge schnoz in Roxanne. This is a good start right?

In I.Q., Meg Ryan plays Catherine, granddaughter of Einstein (who is played by what looks like his twin brother AKA Walter Matthau). Tim Robbins plays Ed, the car mechanic who has no chance with Catherine because of his average intelligence. Hijinks ensue. This is not a complex movie. This is a sweet rom-com that’s perfect for a lazy weekend.

“But, Molly!” you protest, “It’s days away from St. Patrick’s Day. Shouldn’t you choose a film based on an actual holiday?”

First of all, how dare you?!

Second, I have picked another movie. Hold your horses.

hero_EB20100331REVIEWS100339983AR

The Secret of Kells is a spirited, fictionalized account of how the famous Book of Kells was made. (The Book of Kells is an illuminated book of the four gospels. It is stunning. Google it after you read this post posthaste.) The animation is beautiful, and the story takes it time weaving around old myths and faeries. I won’t say anymore because I don’t want to spoil the plot. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie, which was nominated for an Oscar in 2010 and an Annie in 2009. Its is also available on Netflix, so you don’t have to wait until the 17th to watch it.

Weekend Watchlist: Black History Month

February is Black History Month, so I wanted to incorporate some celebratory movies into our regularly scheduled couch surfing. I should have posted this Watchlist on the first of the month, but I had a hard time finding a family-friendly movie to recommend. Since the history of African Americans includes many afflictions, most of the movies I wanted to include are not appropriate for little eyes. I finally found a good one today, so I am writing this post as fast as I can.

c/o Wikipedia

Starting with the oldest released film, I recommend Do The Right Thing released in 1989. This is not just a movie about a Brooklyn pizza delivery guy and his friends sweating it out on a sweltering summer day. It’s about how deeply ingrained racism is in our society. People are not good or bad but good and bad. Writer/director/actor Spike Lee was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, and Danny Aiello was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 1990 Academy Awards. Do The Right Thing is available for rent on Amazon Instant.

You probably watched 12 Years a Slave when it was released in 2013 or after it was nominated for practically every award at the 2014 Oscars and won Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, it’s still worth a mention. Based on Solomon Northup’s memoir of the same name, 12 Years a Slave shows the horror and struggles of a free-born New York man who is captured and sold into slavery in Louisiana. If you haven’t seen this brilliant movie, you should. I may or may not have cried at the end of this movie. 12 Years a Slave is available on DVD at Netflix.

Please do not watch the aforementioned R-rated movies with your toddlers. (Or at least don’t blame me if they don’t like them.) It was not an easy task to find a film about Civil Rights for children, much less a well-made one. This film is based on the children’s book of the same name by Christopher Paul Curtis, which won several awards including the Newbery Honor. This movie might be a little slow for younger viewers, but it is still appropriate to watch with all ages. Your kids also might recognize the voice of the mom from The Princess and the Frog. That’s right. Princess Tiana is now a mom of three.

This movie is about a family from Michigan who goes to visit their grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama during the tumultuous year of 1963. I have a special place in my heart for Civil Rights movies that include Birmingham and the 16th Street Baptist Church because I visited the church and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute when my husband and I relocated to Birmingham in 2012.The most heart-breaking part of the Institute was the portion dedicated to the little girls who died in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. There can be no greater evil than the murder of innocent children.

I learned a lot while I was in Birmingham. Did you know that Asian American children were segregated in schools too? Chinese American children were segregated, but Indian American children were declared to have the same ancestor as Scandinavians and therefore declared white. I learned about it at the Civil Rights Institute. It’s weird because the 60’s were not that long ago. It could have been me attending a colored-only school or having to sit at the back of the bus. I feel very grateful to everyone who was part of the Civil Rights Movement, and I celebrate the proud history of African Americans.

Mani Monday: The Thrill of Brazil and Lots of Hearts

IMG_1379
I apologize for my lack of “themeing” this month. I had many more Valentine’s Day-themed things planned, but I have been preoccupied celebrating my husband’s movie and trying to watch all of the Oscar nominees before the awards show (which did not happen).

Speaking of the Oscars, wasn’t Lady Gaga’s Sound of Music tribute well done? Lady Gaga is not only an amazing singer, but also a lady who loves a theme. Have you seen her engagement ring? It’s heart-shaped of course.

As another lady who loves a theme, I pull out my heart-patterned purse every February. I bought it for $5 from J.C. Penney when I worked there one summer break from college. This purse was in the bottom of a clearance bin, and a customer brought two over to my register in another department. When I told her how much I loved them, she hurried over to the bin and fished the last one out for me so that I could buy it on my break. Working retail was fun, but it was not that great for my savings account.

My classic red nails are The Thrill of Brazil from OPI, which was the first bottle of OPI I ever bought. I have a theory that the old nail polishes had longer lasting power due to all of the chemicals in them that were bad for the environment. I’m glad nail polish is now more eco-friendly, but sometimes I miss the good ol’ days of long wear time.

What old things do you miss? Beanie Babies? Milky pens? Ignorance of how bad processed food is? Let me know in the comments!

Weekend Watchlist: 2015 Oscars Edition

This Oscars are this weekend, and I will be watching it despite my misgivings about the academy (previously & briefly discussed here). Usually, the best part of the Oscars is the red carpet pre-show. However, since Neil Patrick Harris is hosting, I assume that the best part of the show will be his musical opening number.

What should you watch to pre-game the 2015 Oscars? Here are my picks:

Selma_poster
Selma
February is Black History Month. I actually wrote a Weekend Watchlist post celebrating this fact during the first week of February but didn’t post it because I am looking to add a kid-friendly film. I will say more about this movie and Black History Month next weekend. However, if you would like to learn a little bit more about Civil Rights Movement (which wasn’t that long ago), then Selma is the movie for you. David Oyelowo’s performance is perfectly nuanced, and there’s some fun camera moves in the film.

“Glory” by John Legend and Common is nominated for Best Original Song.

Whiplash-5547.cr2Whiplash
I haven’t seen all of the Oscar nominees yet, but Whiplash is my favorite thus far. As a former student musician (with far less talent than anyone in this movie) and a person with an addictive personality, I might even enjoy this movie for the wrong reasons. Whatever the case may be, I really like this film and must give props to a guy who will play the drums until his hands bleed.

Whiplash is nominated in several different categories: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (J. K. Simmons), Best Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The last nomination is crock because Whiplash was originally written as full-length screenplay. However, parts of the screenplay were turned into a short film, which is why it is egregiously allowed to be a part of this category.

large_big_hero_six_ver2
Big Hero 6
You haven’t seen any of the Oscar-nominated movies yet. What do you do? You go see/rent Big Hero 6 because it is nominated for Best Animated Feature Film and also include Best Short Film: Animated. The animation for Big Hero 6 wasn’t as revolutionary as How to Train Your Dragon 2, but the story was far superior (and really the animation is nothing to sneeze at). Also, the short film, Feast, is beyond adorable. Spoiler alert: Feast involves a puppy!

A_Star_Is_Born_1937
A Star Is Born

You don’t care about the Oscars and want to watch something at home in your pjs. Good for you. My pick for you is the original 1937 version of A Star Is Born (available on Netflix streaming). Not only is this an excellent movie that won Best Writing Original Story and Special Award for color photography, but also it includes a scene at a fictional Oscars ceremony.
Whatever you decide to watch (or not watch), may you have an amazing and cold weekend. As for me, I’ll be enjoying the cold weather by renting Box Trolls on Saturday and playing Jessica Jones’ annual Oscar Bingo, which can be downloaded for free on her blog here.
